“Creativity Breeds Innovation”

Aside from his professional credentials outlined in other parts of this web site, Rod is one of the pioneers in bringing bowling leagues in the Washington metro area to the Internet.  Rod’s expertise with intermingling desktop application programming with HTML and desktop publishing, along with a tireless dedication to an extensive data entry process produced a web site back in 1996 that even today, is still unparalleled in its field in regard to a magnitude of information displayed in a rapid turnaround time.  These efforts brought an awareness of small ball variations into the sport of bowling that was previously dominated by the conventional sport seen on TV.  Rod’s“WorldLeagues.net” web site and its predecessor, “MMSTL.com” (which stood for Mens Maryland Suburban Traveling League), generated over a million hits from over 100 countries during the past 19 years, which is pretty remarkable when considering that the sites referenced only a couple of singular duckpin bowling leagues, and with only Internet search engines as a means for locating these web sites.  Neighbors to the north (Canada) and the south (Argentina) have discovered American duckpins through WorldLeagues.net and made the journeys from their respective countries to compete in U.S. duckpin bowling events--something that had never been done prior to the year 2000.

On the subject of innovation, the creative efforts that went into the weekly publishing of the WorldLeagues web site actually produced a vision of the future of one of today’s biggest social media explosions.  A feature termed as “text webcasting” on the WorldLeagues web site, which is documented on the cover of one of the 2005 weekly publications, can be credited 'with an assist' as a forerunner of one of the big social media presences, namely Twitter, which was founded in 2006 (note the initials of "text webcasting" are the 1st 2 characters of "Twitter". The term "tweets" has an interesting origin, as well).  Text Webcasting utilized a cell phone, an HP Ipaq handheld computer, and a portable keyboard to send live newsfeeds back to the WorldLeagues web site, in a concise, play-by-play format, much like the short but informative posts seen in today’s world of social media.
